Hope you all had a great weekend!

We had a birthday party we went to on the weekend and instead of the usual cupcakes that I normally bring to parties, I thought it would be more fun to bring donuts instead since I hadn’t made them in a while.

The birthday girl’s favorite color is red and pink so I thought it would be perfect to make her some Baked Red Velvet Cake Donuts since Valentine’s Day is coming up too.




These donuts are somewhat healthier than other donut recipes at only about 175 calories each minus the cream cheese glaze.

They are also pretty easy to whip up since you don’t need your mixer.


I used a combination of cake flour and white whole wheat flour in here but feel free to just use the whole cup of cake flour if you don’t have white whole wheat flour lying around.

Instead of melted butter, I used melted coconut oil, non-fat plain Greek yogurt, low-fat buttermilk and a touch of olive oil to ensure that these donuts were moist and fluffy.



They had that perfect classic Red Velvet taste of chocolate and vanilla and were like soft and light cakey cupcakes in donut form and made the perfect base for a slightly tangy and sweet cream cheese glaze frosting.




These donuts were a huge hit at the party and the birthday girl has already requested I make them again instead of cupcakes from now on.

The batter only makes about 7 donuts (my donut pan can only hold 6 so I poured the remaining batter in my single mini bundt cake pan).

The recipe can easily be doubled if you need to make more though.



I made a bigger batch for the party and my hubby loved them so much that I made this smaller batch for him once we got back from the party.

They still tasted  incredibly light and moist on the second and third morning.

These donuts make a great treat any time of year.

Feel free to dress them up with some pink and red sprinkles or  hearts  and share them with your sweetie on Valentine’s Day!

Baked Red Velvet Cake Donuts with Cream Cheese Glaze
Cook time
Classic Red Velvet cake transformed into donuts / doughnuts with a sweet and slightly tangy cream cheese glaze
Yields: 7
  • * ½ cup cake flour
  • * ½ cup white whole wheat flour (feel free to use all purpose flour instead)
  • * 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • * ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • * ¼ cup brown sugar
  • * 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • * ⅓ cup buttermilk
  • * 2 tablespoons coconut oil, melted and cooled (can also use melted butter)
  • * 2 tablespoons of non-fat plain Greek yogurt (can also use sour cream)
  • * ½ tablespoon of oil (I used olive oil but you can also use vegetable or canola oil)
  • * 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • * ¾ teaspoon distilled white vinegar
  • * ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • * ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • * ¼ teaspoon salt
  • * ½ - 1 teaspoon red food coloring depending on how red you want the donuts (I used ½ teaspoon of AmeriColor Super Red)

  • Cream Cheese Glaze
  • * ¼ cup cream cheese, softened
  • * ½ - ¾ cup powdered sugar, or more depending on desired consistency
  • * 3 tablespoons heavy cream, or more depending on desired consistency
  • * ½ teaspoon of lemon juice or lemon extract
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Lightly spray donut pan with baking spray.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the flours, cocoa, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  4. In a liquid measuring cup, pour in the buttermilk and whisk in egg, melted coconut oil, Greek yogurt, vanilla extract, distilled vinegar and olive oil.
  5. Add the liquids to the flour mixture stirring with a rubber spatula until just combined.
  6. Add red food coloring a little bit at a time while stirring until desired color has been reached.
  7. Using a small spoon fill each donut pan about ⅔ of the way full or you can transfer the donut batter to a ziplock or pastry bag and squeeze in. The batter was thick so I found using a spoon was easier. IMG_1485.jpg
  8. Bake for 7-8 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean and cool in pan for 5 minutes before moving to wire rack to cool completely before adding glaze. IMG_1504.jpg
Cream Cheese Glaze
  1. In a medium bowl, whisk or beat cream cheese until it smooths out.
  2. Add lemon juice or extract and continue whisking.
  3. Slowly add powdered sugar a little bit at a time, whisking until smooth.
  4. Add heavy cream one tablespoon at a time, whisking constantly until desired consistency has been reached. Add gel food coloring to glaze if desired.
  5. Dip donuts into glaze or frost them with a small spoon.
  6. Redip donuts a few times if you want them completely covered. I dipped the donuts a total of 3 times to get them to the desired thickness. IMG_1525.jpg IMG_1528.jpg
  7. Top with sprinkles or hearts. IMG_1534.jpg
*The brand of food coloring you use will depend on how much you will need to reach the desired consistency. I used AmeriColor Super Red and added a about ½ teaspoon.
