Gong Hei Fat Choi - Sweet and Sour Pork

So we are all loaded up and on our way to our family’s Chinese New Year dinner about an hour’s away.  The lil guy is sound asleep in his car seat and I can’t help but smile when I think of seeing my little nieces and nephew again.  The lil guy has definitely missed his cousins and has mentioned them almost everyday since coming home from our last visit on Christmas.

At ah gong and ah mas house, the kiddies will be busy playing and the adults will get to catch up over a large feast of noodles, spring rolls, a hotpot of meat and veggies and bbq’d meat.  Ty’s favorite dish that I will be making for him at home is the ever so popular Sweet and Sour Pork.  A colorful meat and veggie dish with the perfect mix of sweet and sour. Just thinking about this perfect combination of flavors is making my mouth water….

“um honey can you drive a little faster please?” :-)

Gong Hei Fat Choi and wishing you all a wonderful and colorful feast on the first day of Chinese Lunar New Year!

Sweet and Sour Pork

Serves – 2-3

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb pork tenderloin (cut into bite sized pieces)

  • 1/2 fresh cored and cut pineapple

  • 1 red bell pepper

  • 1 green bell pepper

  • 1 clove of minced garlic

1 tablespoon cooking oil (I used Canola) for deep fying

Pork Marinade

  • 1/2 teaspoon of soy sauce

  • pinch of black pepper

  • 1/2 teaspoon of corn flour

Frying Batter

  • 1/4 cup of all purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Sweet and Sour Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons tomato ketchup

  • 1/2 teaspoon vinegar

  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce

  • 1 teaspoon oyster sauce

  • 1-2 teaspoons potato or corn starch

  • 1/2 tablespoon sugar

  • 2 tablsepoons of water

  • 1/2 teaspoon of soy sauce

  • 1/8 teaspoon of sesame oil

Method:

1.  Cut the pork tenderloin into pieces and marinate pork for 20 minutes.

2.  Mix all the ingredients for the sauce in a bowl and set aside.

3.  Heat up a skillet or frying pan and fill with the cooking oil for deep frying.

4.  Once the pork is well marinated, transfer into the frying batter and coat each piece well.  Deep fry the pork until they turn golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.  (If desired you can deep-fry the pork a second time to make it extra crispy)

5.  Heat up another frying pan or wok on medium and add 1 teaspoon of oil.  Add the garlic once the oil is heated up and stir-fry for about 1 minute.  Add the chopped bell peppers and pineapples and stir-fry for another 4-6 minutes depending on how crisp you want the vegetables.

6.  Add the sauce and let it come to a boil.  The sauce will thicken up and you can adjust or add in more seasonings according to your taste.
