Custard Toast is not your typical breakfast – it's a rich, dessert-like twist on classic French toast made with a yogurt custard that's taking over social media and the world by storm! This new TikTok trend is made with your favorite gluten-free bread with a creamy yogurt custard and your favorite toppings! Our version is dairy-free with a regular and vegan option.
Place 2 tablespoons of chickpea flour into a medium-sized bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of water and stir the mixture into a thick paste. Then add an additional tablespoon of water and a teaspoon of oil. Stir well.
Allow the mixture to sit for at least 5 minutes before using it.
*Non-vegans, start here: Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a small baking sheet with parchment paper.
Whisk together the (vegan) egg, yogurt and maple syrup in a medium-sized bowl until the custard is smooth and well combined.
Use the back of a spoon or fork to press into the center of each slice of bread, creating an indent. You want to make a rectangle well without breaking or ripping the bread.
Spoon some of the custard mixture into each indent and place your desired toppings evenly on top of the custard.
Place your prepared bread onto the lined baking sheet. Bake it in the preheated oven for 8-12 minutes, or until the custard is set and the edges start to caramelize.
Serve your toast warm with a drizzle of maple syrup or melted chocolate if you'd like.
