Custard Toast

Custard Toast is not your typical breakfast – it's a rich, dessert-like twist on classic French toast made with a yogurt custard that's taking over social media and the world by storm! This new TikTok trend is made with your favorite gluten-free bread with a creamy yogurt custard and your favorite toppings! Our version is dairy-free with a regular and vegan option.

Ingredients

  • 1 large egg see below for vegan option
  • 2 tbsp dairy-free thick Greek-style yogurt or coconut yogurt (can sub regular Greek yogurt if not dairy-free/vegan)
  • 2 tsp maple syrup or preferred sticky liquid sweetener
  • 2 slices bread of your choice , Gluten-free, grain-free, keto or paleo if needed. We like AWG Bakery's Everyday Loaves or BaseCulture’s Grain-Free SourDough bread.

Vegan Egg Substitute

  • 2 tbsp chickpea flour (garbanzo flour)
  • 1 tsp avocado oil or olive oil
  • 2 tbsp water

Our Favorite Topping Combos

  • fresh raspberries and dairy-free chocolate chips
  • fresh blueberries, sliced almonds and a drizzle of maple syrup or melted chocolate

Instructions

Oven Method

  1. Place 2 tablespoons of chickpea flour into a medium-sized bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of water and stir the mixture into a thick paste. Then add an additional tablespoon of water and a teaspoon of oil. Stir well.

    Allow the mixture to sit for at least 5 minutes before using it.

  2. *Non-vegans, start here: Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a small baking sheet with parchment paper.

  3. Whisk together the (vegan) egg, yogurt and maple syrup in a medium-sized bowl until the custard is smooth and well combined.

  4. Use the back of a spoon or fork to press into the center of each slice of bread, creating an indent. You want to make a rectangle well without breaking or ripping the bread.

  5. Spoon some of the custard mixture into each indent and place your desired toppings evenly on top of the custard.

    Place your prepared bread onto the lined baking sheet. Bake it in the preheated oven for 8-12 minutes, or until the custard is set and the edges start to caramelize.

  6. Serve your toast warm with a drizzle of maple syrup or melted chocolate if you'd like.

Air Fryer Method

  2. Allow the mixture to rest for at least 5 minutes before using it.

  3. *Non-vegans, start here: If your Air Fryer requires preheating, heat it to 350°F

  4. Whisk together the (vegan) egg, yogurt and maple syrup in a medium-sized bowl until the custard is smooth and well combined.

  5. Use the back of a spoon or fork to press into the center of each slice of bread, creating an indent. You want to make a rectangle well without breaking or ripping the bread.

  6. Spoon some of the custard mixture into each indent and place your desired toppings evenly on top of the custard.

  7. Air fry your custard toast for 4-5 minutes, or until the custard is set and starts to caramelize on the edges.

  8. Serve the toast warm with a drizzle of maple syrup or melted chocolate if desired.
