What is Matcha?
Matcha powder (“MA-cha” 抹茶) is finely ground green tea powder and is full of antioxidants. Instead of using tea leaves, you simply dissolve matcha green tea powder into warm/hot water to make a cup of matcha tea.
Matcha Latte Ingredients
What you need to make Matcha Latte:
- Bowl: a traditional Japanese tea bowl (chawan) or a wide 12-ounce mug
- Whisk: a bamboo tea whisk (chasen)
- Wooden spoon: or tea scoop (chashaku)
- Ceremonial Grade Matcha powder: we like Ippodo Tea, Jade Leaf or Maeda-en.
- Hot water
- Milk or Cream: we like to use Malk Organics almond milk or Nut Pods dairy-free creamer for our vegan matcha latte
Optional:
- Sweetener of your choice: you can use sugar-free maple syrup or liquid monk fruit sweetener for a low carb, keto version or pure maple syrup for a paleo matcha latte
- Pure vanilla extract
How to Make Matcha Latte at Home:
- Use your scoop or spoon to measure out about out 1.5 teaspoons of matcha powder into your matcha bowl or mug.
- Take the bamboo tea whisk and use the tip to gently whisk the green tea powder to break up any large pieces or clumps.
- Pour 1-2 tablespoons of hot water or boiling water over the matcha powder.
- Use the bamboo whisk again to whisk vigorously in a back-and-forth zig-zag motion or a “W” motion for about 30 seconds, until a loose paste forms. This helps to ensure the matcha dissolves smoothly with no clumps.
- Fill the cup with the remaining 1/2 cup hot water and sweetener, if using then whisk again, until small bubbles form. You can also use a handheld frother to create even more bubbles.
- Heat your dairy-free milk in a frothing pitcher or on the stove-top until hot and steamy then use a handheld frother to make it even more frothy.
- Pour the frothed / steam milk into your mug or make into latte art. Taste and add more sweetener, if desired. Enjoy immediately.
