When it comes to toppings, you can load your custard toast up with whatever you’d like. From a handful of fresh berries to a drizzle of melted chocolate, the sky is the limit! If you’re looking for a fun new breakfast that comes together with ease, you’ve just found the golden goose.
What is Custard Toast?
Also referred to as yogurt toast, custard yogurt toast is a variation of French toast that features—you guessed it—custard. Instead of being drenched in a milk and egg mixture, yogurt toast is covered in a custard made out of yogurt, eggs and maple syrup or honey. This gives it a richer, creamier texture than traditional French toast.
Once the bread is smothered in that silky yogurt custard, it’s baked in the oven until every slice has beautifully caramelized edges. This recipe will teach you how to make flawless custard toast in the Air Fryer as well!
What You’ll Need
Sit down, buckle up, and get ready for a crash landing into pure deliciousness. With this short and sweet ingredient lineup, custard toast practically makes itself.
- Egg: You’ll need 1 large egg. Use chickpea flour, water and avocado/olive oil for vegan yogurt toast. These ingredients will be used to make a plant-based “egg.”
- Greek Style Dairy-Free Yogurt: Or coconut yogurt. If you’re not dairy-free or vegan, feel free to opt for regular Greek yogurt.
- Maple Syrup: Make sure it’s pure and not artificial. Honey works well too!
- Bread of your choice: Gluten-free, grain-free, keto or paleo if needed. We like AWG Bakery’s Everyday Loaves or BaseCulture’s Grain-Free SourDough bread which are all paleo, low carb and keto-friendly. We found using thick sourdough bread slices produced the best results.
How to Make Custard French Toast
This dish truly couldn’t be quicker or easier. If you’re not vegan, go ahead and skip to step 3.
In the Oven
- Combine Flour, Water & Oil: Place 2 tablespoons of chickpea flour into a medium-sized bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of water and stir the mixture into a thick paste. Then add an additional tablespoon of water and a teaspoon of oil. Stir well.
- Let Rest: Allow the mixture to sit for at least 5 minutes before using it.
- Heat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a small baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Make Custard: Whisk together the (vegan) egg, yogurt and maple syrup in a medium-sized bowl until the custard is smooth and well combined.
- Indent Bread: Use the back of a spoon or fork to press into the center of each slice of bread, creating an indent. You want to make a rectangle well without breaking or ripping the bread.
- Add Custard: Spoon some of the custard mixture into each indent and place any desired toppings evenly on top of the custard.
- Bake: Place your prepared bread onto the lined baking sheet. Bake it in the preheated oven for 8-12 minutes, or until the custard is set and the edges start to caramelize.
- Enjoy! Serve your toast warm with a drizzle of maple syrup or melted chocolate if you’d like.
In the Air Fryer
- Combine Vegan Egg Ingredients: Place 2 tablespoons of chickpea flour into a medium-sized bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of water and stir the mixture into a thick paste. Then add an additional tablespoon of water and a teaspoon of oil. Stir well.
- Let Sit: Allow the mixture to rest for at least 5 minutes before using it.
- Heat Air Fryer: If your Air Fryer requires preheating, heat it to 350°F.
- Cook: Air fry your custard toast for 4-5 minutes, or until the custard is set and starts to caramelize on the edges.
- Enjoy! Serve the toast warm with a drizzle of maple syrup or melted chocolate if desired.
Tips for Success
Make your custard toast as tasty as possible by taking a mental note of these tips.
- Let the Vegan Egg Rest: Be sure to let your plant-based egg sit undisturbed for at least 5 minutes before you use it in your custard. This allows it to develop the proper consistency.
- Indent the Bread Carefully: In order to prevent breakage, take your time when you’re indenting the bread. I recommend using a spoon rather than a fork if possible. If your bread is a little stale, it’s even more important to be gentle.
- Know Your Oven/Air Fryer: You may need to cook your yogurt toast for more or less time – it all depends on your oven or which Air Fryer model you have. Once you notice the edges start to caramelize, your toast is good to go!
- Bread: You can use any bread you like. Sourdough bread is definitely the winning choice for custard toast all over social media.
