If you’re like me and do a ton of baking in the fall, buying those small containers at $4-5 of pumpkin pie spice from the store can add up. In fact, it can end up getting pretty expensive when you’re a recipe tester or bake a lot during the chilly fall months of October and November.
Did you know that making your own takes less than five minutes? All you need are just a few common spices you probably already have in your pantry. One batch usually makes more than what you get at the store so you can save all that extra money and a trip to the store.
Making your own pumpkin spice is fairly inexpensive, plus you can tweak the amounts and customize it to meet your taste.
What is pumpkin pie spice made of:
Believe it or not, pumpkin pie spice has no pumpkin in it.
All it takes to make your own pumpkin spice at home is:
- Ground cinnamon
- Ground ginger
- All spice
- Cloves
- Mace
- Nutmeg
If you love the strong punch of cloves and ginger — just bump up the amount and add a little more in. Don’t have mace? No problem, just leave it out. It’s gluten free, keto, Whole30 and contains no sugar or nuts.
How to make pumpkin pie spice:
- Simply whisk all the dried spices together in a small bowl.
- Store in a small, airtight container away from the light until ready to use.
What is pumpkin spice for?

Does pumpkin spice expire?
Like other dried spice blends, pumpkin spice can usually last a pretty long time (about 2 years) if stored properly. The key is to store it a resealable container with a tight lid in a cool and dark space.

- 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 2 teaspoons ground ginger
- 1-1/2 teaspoons ground allspice** see note below for substitutions
- 1 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoons ground mace* see note below for substitutions
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Whisk all the ingredients together in a small bowl.
- Store in a small, airtight container away from the light until ready to use.
If you prefer more of one spice or less of another, adjust the amounts to your liking.
*If you can't find mace or don't already have it in your pantry, feel free to leave it out and swap in nutmeg instead.
**If you don't have allspice in your pantry already whisk in another 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 1/2 ground cloves, and 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg to make up the 1 1/2 teaspoons of allspice.
