How to Cut Sweet Potato Fries
The key to making the best air fryer sweet potato fries without cornstarch is to cut all the pieces as evenly and thinly so that they will all cook evenly. It’s okay if they are not all perfectly even since it will depend on the size of your sweet potato. We just want to make sure that they are roughly the same since the small pieces will cook faster and could burn in the air fryer.
- Place your sweet potato on a cutting board, and using a shark knife, cut the sweet potato down the middle vertically into thin slices.
- Stack the slices on top of each other then cut the sweet potato into french fry pieces that are about 1/4-inch thick.
Ingredients
All you really need to make sweet potato fries are the potatoes and your seasonings of choice. Here’s the fool-proof ingredient combination we use for ours:
- Medium Sweet Potatoes: Scrubbed, rinsed and dried.
- Avocado Oil: we prefer using avocado oil for my baked sweet potato fries to get the perfect texture but you can also sub with olive oil.
- Coarse Sea Salt: Or kosher salt, to taste.
- Black Pepper: Freshly cracked, to taste.
- Garlic Powder: For depth of flavor.
- Smoked Paprika: To add a lovely touch of heat!
- Parsley: Chopped, for serving.
- Lemon Wedges: For serving.
Dipping Sauce Variations:
Avocado Dip
- 1 avocado
- ½ lime
- 1 tsp fresh coriander, finely chopped
- Salt and pepper
Cashew Cheese Dip
- ¼ cup cashews
- ¼ cup unsweetened plant-based milk
- 3 tbsp nutritional yeast
- Pinch of smoked paprika
- ¼ tsp garlic powder
How to Make Sweet Potato Fries in the Air Fryer
All you have to do is cut up your sweet potatoes, season them, fry them up, then—BOOM—flawless sweet potato fries!
- Heat Air Fryer: If your air fryer requires preheating, preheat it to 380°F.
- Cut Potatoes: Slice the sweet potatoes into even ¼ inch strips, or use a fry cutter if you have one.
- Season: In a large bowl, toss the potatoes with oil and season them with salt, black pepper and garlic powder.
- Place in Air Fryer Basket: Working in batches (depending on the size of your air fryer), place the fries in the air fryer basket in a single layer, making sure they are not crowded or overlapping.
- Cook: Air fry at 380°F for 10-13 minutes (or longer), flipping halfway through, until the fries are golden brown or until they’ve reached your desired crispness.
- Garnish & Serve: Transfer the fries to a serving platter and sprinkle them with coarse salt and chopped fresh parsley. Serve them with your desired dipping sauce(s) and enjoy!
To make the dips
- Avocado Dip: Mash the avocado in a bowl with the back of a fork until smooth with the juice of ½ lime. Add the coriander and then season with salt and pepper.
- Aioli Dip: Blend the dip until it is smooth. If you don’t have a high speed blender soak them in hot water for 30 mins then drain.
Tips for Success
You can’t go wrong with this recipe! Here are a few extra tips for making sweet potato fries in the air fryer:
- Cut Fries Evenly: Using a fry cutter is the easiest way to get evenly-sized fries, but you can also cut and measure them on your own. Just slice each potato in half, lengthwise, and cut it into long, 1/4-inch strips (the fries will shrink a bit as they cook).
- Don’t Crowd the Air Fryer: Make sure you’re not putting too many fries in your air fryer basket at once. It’s better to work in batches. If your fries are too crowded, they won’t get as crispy.
- Preheat if Needed: Some air fryers don’t require preheating, but if yours does, don’t skip that step. The air fryer should be at 380°F before you put your fries in.
- Flip Fries Halfway Through: Use tongs to flip your sweet potato fries halfway through the cooking process. This ensures crispiness all around!
