WHAT IS A CHAFFLE?
Have you hopped on the chaffle train? Chaffles are all the rage right now on Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest. This popular breakfast recipe has taken the keto world by storm. It went viral overnight in forums and it’s not hard to see why.
All you really need for the recipe is just cheese + eggs plus a waffle maker. They cook up just like waffles so they’re perfect for breakfast with a side of bacon. Or you can even use them for anything you would normally use sandwich bread for. Our favorite chaffle recipes so far are these Pumpkin Chaffles, Chaffle Sandwich and for a delicious low carb Chaffle Pizza.
WHAT ARE CHAFFLES MADE OF?
There are lots of different variations on chaffles. The original chaffle recipe is made with just 2 ingredients using cheese and eggs.
It’s super quick and easy to make and takes just 5 minutes to make using a mini waffle maker. Even your kids and husband can help!
Another thing we love using chaffles for is they make the perfect low carb keto bread alternative.
We’ve used them for breakfast sandwiches, pizza sandwiches, turkey and cheese sandwiches, egg salad sandwiches and tuna salad sandwiches.
WHAT WAFFLE MAKER MAKE THE BEST CHAFFLES?
The best part about making chaffles is that you can use any waffle maker you have. These are the two we use:
SO WHERE CAN I BUY THE DASH MINI WAFFLE MAKER?
We bought ours on Amazon, but you can find them at Target, Crate & Barrel and Bed Bath & Beyond.
INGREDIENTS FOR KETO CHAFFLES:
Our copycat chaffle recipe makes 4 mini waffles in a DASH mini waffle maker
or 2 waffles if you’re using a Belgian Waffle Maker:
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup superfine blanched almond flour: adds structure and makes them less eggy/cheesy and more bread like
- 3/4 teaspoon baking powder: makes them rise and extra fluffy
- 1 cup shredded cheese: use your favorite – I used a mix of shredded mozzarella cheese and shredded cheddar cheese
HOW TO MAKE CHAFFLES:
COAT WAFFLE IRON: Lightly spray your waffle maker with cooking spray or ghee and let it heat up on high.
MAKE THE BATTER: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, almond flour and baking powder. Stir in cheese until combined.
COOK THE CHAFFLES:
IF USING A BELGIAN WAFFLE MAKER: Pour half of the waffle batter into the middle of your waffle iron and close the lid. Cook until crispy, flip and cook again as necessary.
IF USING A DASH MINI WAFFLE MAKER: Pour 1/4 cup of the waffle batter into the middle of your waffle iron and close the lid. Cook until crispy, flip and cook again as necessary.
SERVE HOT: Carefully transfer to plate and serve with some butter, sugar free maple syrup or your desired toppings.
CHAFFLE VARIATIONS:
Over the last few weeks, we’ve been testing a bunch of different ways you can make chaffles.
- SWEET CHAFFLES: Add cinnamon, vanilla extract and low carb sweetener of your choice. We like monk fruit sweetener but erythritol or SWERVE would work as well.
- PUMPKIN CHAFFLES: Add pumpkin pie spice, maple extract and low carb sweetener.
- CHOCOLATE CHAFFLES: Add cacao powder or unsweetened cocoa powder, vanilla extract, low carb sweetener and sugar free chocolate chips.
- PEANUT BUTTER CHAFFLES: Add peanut butter, vanill extract, low carb sweetener and top with chopped peanuts and a drizzle of peanut butter.
- ALMOND BUTTER WAFFLES: Add almond butter, vanilla extract, low carb sweetener and top with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and a drizzle of almond butter.
FOR SAVORY CHAFFLES:
- 2 INGREDIENT CHAFFLES: The original chaffle recipe uses 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese and 1 large egg.
- PIZZA CHAFFLES: Cook the chaffle batter until crispy then top with marinara sauce, shredded mozzarella, pepperoni, cherry tomatoes and basil. Bake at 375 F until cheese melts.
- CHAFFLE SANDWICHES: Cook the batter until crispy then stuff with any ingredients you like: Make ham and cheese chaffles, bacon and egg or turkey and cheese waffle sandwiches.
ARE CHAFFLES KETO?
Yes! Since they’re made with eggs and cheese, they are completely grain free, gluten free, low carb and ketogenic friendly.
The nutritional info for 1 mini chaffle is:
- 165 calories
- 2g NET CARBS = 3g Total Carbs – 1g Fiber
- 12g Fat
- 11g Protein
- 1g Sugar
HOW TO STORE CHAFFLES:
The great thing about chaffles is you can make a big batch on your meal prep Sunday and store them in the fridge or freezer when you’re ready to eat them.
CAN YOU FREEZE CHAFFLE CAKES?
Lay them flat in a single layer on a baking sheet. Place the pan in the freezer for 30 minutes. Transfer to a large resealable freezer bag or an airtight freezable container.
TO REHEAT LOW CARB WAFFLES:
Remove the low carb waffles from the freezer and reheat them in the waffle maker or in the oven at 350F until crispy.

This Recipe Is the most like a “real waffle” in Consistency and flavor, in my opinion. Not as eggy as other recipes. I added 1 TBSP Of sweRve confectioners and some vanilla (didn’t measure) and they came out perfect. Delicious!
